Who can be referred to Home-Start Haringey Hackney and Waltham Forest to receive support?

Any family living in Haringey, Hackney or Waltham Forest and experiencing difficulties and has at least one child under the age of 12 can either ask someone to refer them, or they can refer themselves. Have a look at our Referrals page for more information.

Who can refer families to Home-Start Haringey Hackney and Waltham Forest for support?

Our referrals come to us via many different routes: health visitors, social workers, community psychiatric nurses, teachers, probation officers, playgroup workers or GPs. Families are very welcome to refer themselves too. Have a look at our Referrals page for more information.

How long does Home-Start Haringey Hackney and Waltham Forest support a family?

We support a family for an average of 6 - 9 months; support can be extended based on identified need in the family. The family is fully involved in decisions made regarding their support.

Would a family have to pay for Home-Start support?

No, service is totally free.

Can Home-Start Haringey Hackney and Waltham Forest support families who speak only a little English?

We are very fortunate in that we have volunteers who speak a wide range of community languages, and we will do our best to ensure we can give every family the support they need. Do call and speak to one of our members of staff should you want to have a full discussion prior to referring a family.

If I volunteer, can I claim my travel expenses?

Home-Start is happy to re-imburse volunteers' travel expenses, but do speak to your Co-ordinator to see what we can and cannot reimburse.

What does the Home-Start Haringey Hackney and Waltham Forest preparation course cover?

The course fully prepares volunteers for supporting a family. The topics covered include: commitment, boundaries, family needs, personal safety, confidentiality, listening skills, equal opportunities, safeguarding, working with families with disabilities, cultural awareness, community networks and services, importance of play in development, HIV awareness and domestic violence awareness.
